The case for a second pair

Not vanity. One pair doing three jobs is one pair doing all of them at seventy per cent.

Most people own one pair and expect it to handle a screen, a highway and a workshop. Those are three different optical problems, and a single lens design has to compromise on at least two of them.

The second pair is usually cheaper than the first, because I already have your measurements and your prescription on file. What took forty-five minutes the first time takes twenty the second.

Where it pays off first

  • A dedicated screen pair if you work at a desk. The single biggest comfort change most people report.
  • Prescription sunglasses if you drive more than an hour a day.
  • A spare that lives in the truck, the boat, or the tool bag, in whatever your last prescription was.
